Lithium production in Poland to build independence in critical mineral supply
Lithium for a sustainable energy transition
Lithium is a mineral of critical importance for the energy transition and the main component of the batteries used in electric vehicles and in energy storage for the power grid. Large quantities of it are needed for electromobility to grow.
Poland’s lithium brine deposits
Poland holds significant lithium-rich brine resources. Exploring and producing from domestic resources will strengthen the country’s supply chain and reduce dependence on foreign producers. Lithium in Poland can directly supply local industry, including battery manufacturing and the automotive sector, with lower carbon emissions and at competitive cost. These conditions could give rise to a new branch of advanced industry.
Geothermal + lithium
Atana Elements’ ambition in Poland is to combine geothermal energy with lithium production. Our western neighbour, Germany, is already using geothermal resources to decarbonise local heating networks and to reduce dependence on oil and gas supplied from other countries. In some areas, geothermal projects are fed by hot brines that can also be a source of lithium. Developing hot, lithium-rich brines can bring a double benefit to society and local communities. Poland has exactly this potential.
Environmentally friendly lithium extraction
Atana Elements’ goal is to study the underground brines found in Poland and identify resources that can be used for responsible lithium production.
Direct lithium extraction (DLE) technology allows lithium to be extracted with high efficiency, at minimal cost and with an exceptionally low environmental impact. DLE requires significantly less land and water than conventional methods such as open-pit mining and evaporation from brine ponds.
About the project
Atana Elements has carried out extensive studies and preliminarily identified geothermal brine resources containing lithium in selected areas of Poland. The company plans to study these areas in detail over a period of five years, to identify the most promising underground brine deposits and determine potential locations for geological work. If the studies are successful, a team of experts will drill an exploration well.
Once the lithium resources have been evaluated, Atana Elements plans to work with Polish industry to create a domestic, environmentally responsible lithium production facility.
