Atana Elements projects in Germany

German lithium production for a low-carbon future

Lithium for electrification

Lithium is a critical mineral for the energy transition. It is the main component of the batteries used in electric vehicles and in energy storage for the power grid. Significantly more lithium is needed to drive electrification forward.

Germany’s lithium brine resources

Germany has abundant lithium brine resources at home. Building a domestic lithium supply will strengthen the German supply chain and reduce dependence on foreign producers. Domestic lithium can directly supply German industry, including battery manufacturing and the automotive sector - with a smaller carbon footprint than imports and at competitive cost.

Geothermal + lithium

Germany is already developing geothermal resources to decarbonise local and district heating and to reduce dependence on oil and gas supplied from third countries. In certain geological settings, geothermal projects produce a flow of brine that can also serve as a source of lithium. Developing hot, lithium-rich underground brines can bring a double benefit to society and local communities.

Environmentally responsible lithium extraction

Atana Elements’ goal is to explore underground brines and define resources that can be developed for responsible lithium production.

Such brine deposits can be developed using innovative direct lithium extraction (DLE) technology with high efficiency, at minimal cost and with an exceptionally small environmental footprint. DLE requires significantly less land and water than conventional mining methods. It also needs no evaporation ponds or other large-scale surface mining, dramatically reducing the environmental footprint of lithium production.

The projects

We have carried out extensive studies and identified geothermal brine resources with significant lithium content in selected areas of Germany. We plan to study and explore these areas in detail over a period of five years, to identify the most promising underground brine deposits and define potential drilling targets. If exploration is successful, an exploration well will then be drilled by a team of experts.

Once the lithium resources have been fully evaluated, Atana Elements plans to work with German industry to establish domestic, low-cost and environmentally responsible lithium production.

Atana Elements Deutschland GmbH - Atana Elements’ German subsidiary - currently holds the following exploration permits:
